Sappho
Love

Beyond all other mortals is he blessed,
that man who sits by you and can rejoice
in your sweet laughter and your lilting voice
which causes my heart to flutter in my breast.

For every time I look upon your face
a flame devours my body and my mind;
my tongue can speak no word; my eyes are blind;
and in my ears I hear wild waters race.

I shiver and I burn; I turn as pale
as grass in summer drought; I pand for breath;
I seem to balance on the brink of death;
I feel the life-springs of existence fail —

And yet for you, for you I would dare all!...
