"The dramatic, transcendent voice that laments in the Duino Elegies and praises in the Sonette an Orpheus appears as a type of guide who, having gone through and endured his own painful experiences, has come to understand the true nature of the meaning of things and who, in turn, can pass it on. The poetic voice in Rilke's poetry is so compelling as it is an intensely personal, intimate voice, which is able to echo most closely one's own most inward thoughts and concerns. In a sense, it is as if we are hearing a part of our inner selves speaking to us in the form of beautifully crafted insight as part of our own autobiography, giving voice to a deep part of the self or psyche that is usually silent and confronts the most fundamental questions of life, desire, fear, and mortality. Rilke thus provides us with a modern, sensitive poetic voice that is able to express these experiences in modern life, yet remains well grounded and rooted in traditional cultural patterns."
