El sepulcro de Dominico Greco, excelente pintor
Esta en forma elegante, o peregrino,
de pórfido luciente dura llave,
el pincel niega el mundo mas suave
que dio espíritu a leño, vida o lino.

Su nombre, aun de mayor aliento dino
que en los clarines de la fama cabe,
el campo ilustra de esa mármol grave,
Venéralo, y prosigue tu camino.

Yace el Griego, heredó naturaleza
Arte, y el Arte estudio, Iris colores,
Febo luces, sino sombras Morfeo.

Tanta urna, a pesar de su dureza,
lágrimas beba, y cuantos suda olores,
corteza funeral de árbol sabeo.

Кисть нежную, от чьих прикосновений
Холст наливался силою живой.
Сколь ни прославлен трубною Молвой,

Чье имя блещет с мраморных ступеней.
Почти его и путь продолжи свой.
Почиет Грек. Он завещал Природе
Искусство, а Искусству труд, Ириде
Палитру, тень Морфею, Фебу свет.
Сколь склеп ни мал, - рыданий многоводье
Он пьет, даруя вечной панихиде
Куренье древа савского в ответ.

Inscription for El Greco’s Tomb
O pilgrim, this enduring enclosure,
Of shining porphyry in gracious form,
Denies the world the most subtle brush
Than ever gave wood soul, or canvas life.

His name deserving a greater voice
Than rises from the clarions of fame,
Ennobles this field of sombre marble;
Revere it; before you go your way.

Here lies El Greco; Nature inherited
His art; Art his skill; Iris his colours,
Phoebus his light – else Morpheus his shade –

May this urn, despite its solid nature,
Drink tears, and whatever odours ooze
From the Sabean tree’s funereal bark.
