Theodore Stephanides
Epitaph to the Island of Psara*

On Psara, amid smoke eddies streaming,
Glory paces alone in her dreaming,
And she broods o'er the dead as she passes,
And she carries a wreath in her hand —
A wreath of a few withered grasses
That had clung to that desolate land.

(from "Autumn Gleanings: Corfu Memoirs and Poems")

* The small rugged island of Psara, near Chios in the Aegean sea, was the site of resistance by the islanders during the war of independence from the Ottoman empire: many islanders killed themselves with explosives under the banner "Freedom or Death" on 4 July 1821, inspiring Dionysios Solomos to compose his epigram "I Katastrofi ton Psaron" [The Destruction of Psara"] in Apanda vol. I, p. 139. Stephanides reproduces the anapaestic structure if Solomos' poem.
