Sappho
Dying Sappho to Gongyla

I said, "It will be soon". Gongyla said:
"How can you tell? Have you received a sign?"
"Aye," I replied, "Hermes stood by my bed;
I turned and spoke to him: "O Lord divine,
it is the end. I take no more delight
in all that pleased me best beneath the sky.
A longing now pursues me day and night,
an eagerness to close my eyes and die.

'But, Lord, I beg of you to set me down
in those same dewy fields where, by your power,
you guided Agamemnon and the flower
of the Achaeans in their past renown.'"
