Solar Satellite - 2nd January 1959

Small and remote, across the sky careers
A sister to the asteroids; a speck
Revolving in the measured course that steers
It round the beckoning sun.
A man-made fleck
Of matter has been added to the flight
Of planets in that whirl which first began
Long aeons ere the Thought that would shape Man
Had transillumined Earth's primeval night.

And now Man's eager brain and cunning hands
Have launched into the firmament a mote
To presage his star-roving pioneers.
A man-made instrument has joined the bands
Of heaven, and his first faint muted note
Is blended with the Music of the Spheres.
